Rev. Israel Sloane

Rev. Israel Sloane was placed in charge of the United Brethren in Christ mission to Canada in 1854, and he
brought several United Brethren ministers with him. In 1858 he left to become the first
missionary to California in 1858, after proving his success as a missionary in Canada. Sloane
(1825-1864) was a student of Oberlin College (Ohio) from 1843-5, and then a student of
Otterbein University (founded by the United Brethren in Ohio). He was a pastor in the Scioto
Conference (Ohio) before coming to Canada. He died at the age of
thirty-nine.157
